The succus of the design greatly depended on the soil conditions the tractor was being used in. Despite the original design's problems, the stage was set and the competition began for the first commercially available self-propelled tractors.
The tractor itself had to be drawn by horses as there were no driveshaft. Within the structure was a massive flywheel and crankshaft that transferred power to the farm equipment being pulled via a large belt. The engine was built around a locomotive looking frame. The next significant advancement took place around 1860 when William Tuxford invented a fully portable steam engine. The first cases of powered farm equipment started to appear as early as 1812 when Richard Trevithick designed a somewhat portable steam engine, which was used to drive corn threshing machines.
